Unable to use IE 7&8

When updating JAVA I received error message that a semicolon was missing. Not
knowing how to cure this I ignored it. Apparently this missing semicolon
causes IE 7&8 installed on my computer to forget my computer's internet
address. I get an error message that IE can not display the page. When I
click repair, I get a message a LAN cable is not connected. The cable is
plugged in , I have 100G connection and applets like Norton or Microsoft
updates have full connectivity.What do I do to get IE to work. I am using
Mozilla now.
