IE 8 install on XP SP 2
I am attempting to install IE 8 on a machine with XP SP2 and it will not
work. Using the same setup if I upgrade to SP 3 it works fine. The
ie8_main.log states:

00:07.485: ERROR: Setup exit code: 0x0000f0f4 (Setup has detected the
system is missing one or more prerequisites required to install.).

I have tried installing all other windows updates but the service pack and
it still will not install.... then with the service pack installed it works
fine. On the system requirements site for IE 8 it says the minimun
requirements are XP with service pack 2 but this is not the case for me. Is
there a fix for this? I have included a larger portion of the log.

What does that (above) mean?

Was a beta build of IE8 ever installed on the machine-in-question?

Do you use "Registry cleaners"?

Start | Run | (type) winver | OK | In the resulting window, write down the
entire second line of text and post it in a reply to this thread (along with
your answers to the above questions).

So you have a missing pre-requisite. It looks like something installed since
SP2 may have downgraded a system file that IE8 is checking so for which is
why
installing SP3 works because the problem is being corrected. I have IE8
running on XP SP2 here so it does install if the system files are correct.

Have you tried running a System File Check to see if that will correct the
issue?

I am using an image of xp with service pack 2. If I try to install IE8 on a
computer with this sp 2 image it does not work. If I then upgrade to SP 3
then the install works. I have tried this on several computers and seems to
be the only change needed to make IE 8 work.

No, IE8 beta was never installed. I am upgrading directly from IE6 to IE8.

No I do not use registry cleaners.

Version 5.1 (Build 2600.xpsp_sp2_grd.070227-2254 : Service Pack 2)

Re: IE 8 install on XP SP 2
One can only conclude that something's horked in the Image. John.

Any chance a beta build of IE7 had been installed on the machine used to
create the Image?

On the machines where this Image has been used to install WinXP SP2, do you
find...

HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Updates\Windows XP\SP0\ie7bet2p <=this key or
similar (e.g., ie7bet1; ie7bet3)?

(cf.
http://groups.google.com/group/micro...874c37d1c73874)

=> About IE upgrades and WinXP SP3:

1. If SP3 isn't installed by July-10, WinXP SP2 machines will no longer be
offered any critical security updates. If SP3 is installed, such updates
will be offered through Oct-14.

2. If you install IE8 (or IE7) and then install SP3, you won't be able to
uninstall the IE upgrade (should the need arise) without first uninstalling
SP3 (cf. http://blogs.msdn.com/ie/archive/200...and-xpsp3.aspx).

Seeing as IE8 will install on those machines after SP3 is installed and
considering the above, why not install SP3 and then install IE8?

=> HOW TO solve IE8 installation problems
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/949220

No-charge support for Internet Explorer 8 installation, set-up and usage
(only) is available via the phone based on your locale through 31 December
2009. Customers must be running Windows XP or Windows Vista in a non-domain
environment.
=> US & CA Residents: 1-866-234-6020
=> Other locales: https://support.microsoft.com/oas/de...px?&prid=13043

My personal recommendations include:

=> Install IE8 manually, not via Windows Update/Automatic Updates!!

=> Uninstall all third-party toolbars (e.g., Google; Yahoo; Windows Live)
and third-party Windows Themes before installing IE8.

=> Close all open applications (i.e., anything with a taskbar icon) before
installing or uninstalling IE8.

=> I would strongly recommend disabling your anti-virus application and any
anti-spyware application's "system protections" (other than Defender's)
before installing (or uninstalling) an IE upgrade. If you're running a
third-party firewall, I would recommend disabling it and then enabling the
Windows Firewall before installing (or uninstalling) an IE upgrade.

=> Create a Restore Point manually before installing IE8.

=> Reboot twice after installing or uninstalling IE8.

=> For best chance of success with IE8, make certain that your anti-virus
application, any anti-spyware applications (other than Defender), and your
third-party firewall (if any) are supported in IE8 Final before you decide
install it.

Where else in the log(s) do you see that code?
Look for it both without the 0x prefix and without the leading zeros,
so F0F4. You may also find it in its decimal representation, 61684.

In any case I don't think you have captured the necessary context
to identify the cause of your symptom. To supplement whatever
you do get you could run ProcMon and then see whatever other
file or registry accesses are related it the issue of that message.
Note: you have to infer the trace of the issue of that message
based on its length and the pattern of the lengths of the messages
which precede and follow the one you are interested in.

Good luck
