IE8 changes file extension
Hi all

I use Access 2007, a colleague sends me a link to an Access file with a
..mdb extension, when I download the file with IE8 it has a .accdb file
extension.
This DID NOT happen with IE7. It does not happen with Firefox.
Is there a setting within IE8 to prevent the file extension from being
changed?

Many thanks
George Gee

Re: IE8 changes file extension
..accdb This is the standard file name extension for databases in the Office
Access 2007 file format. This format takes the place of the .mdb file name
extension that is used in earlier versions of Access.

And did you have Office 2007 installed when "this did not happen in IE7"?

I don't use Office 2007, but I do understand that the .accdb file extension
has replaced the .mdb file extension in Access 2007:

http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/ac...spx#extensions
".accdb This is the standard file name extension for databases in the
Office Access 2007 file format.
This format takes the place of the .mdb file name extension that is used in
earlier versions of Access. "

The new file format (.accdb)
http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/ac...908451033.aspx

Your question might better be answered in a Microsoft Office newsgroup.

Good Luck,

Donald Anadell

Re: IE8 changes file extension
Did it happen before you installed Office/Access 2007 SP2? Did you install
Office/Access 2007 SP2 and IE8 concurrently?

Re: IE8 changes file extension
The Access file is created using Access 2003, it has a .mdb extension.
If I download the file using Firefox the file extension is .mdb.
If I download the file using IE8 the file extension is .accdb.

IE7 DID NOT change the file extension, IE8 DOES !!!

On which OS? This symptom really has more to do with its filetypes
and the associations some file extensions have and which one is first
alphabetically than about IE. You could try using the Security Settings
option, Disable: Open files based on content, not extension
to change your symptom. Tip: doubleclick on the security zone icon,
enter Custom Level, then press M then O to find that option.

Re: IE8 changes file extension
Do you or do you not have Office/Access 2007 SP2 installed?

Do you or do you not have Compatibility Pack for Office 2007 SP2 installed?

Did you or did you not install either of the above at the same time you
installed IE8?

Re: IE changes file extension
Apologies to all who responded.
I've just uninstalled IE8, this has made no difference,
the .mdb extension is still changed to .accdb using IE7.

I've downloaded the file using:
Firefox
SRWare Iron
Opera
Google Chrome

None of these browsers change the file extension.

I've tried changing the Security settings in IE7 which made no difference.
I'm prepared to leave this here, and use another browser to download
the file.
Thanks for the effort.

George Gee
