IE8 and Manage Add Ons

Since installing IE8 on WIN XP Home a pop up always comes up that a program
tried to change my search provider, when I click OK the Manage Add On screen
then pops up. This happens everytime I open IE8
I cannot add new search agents or change the default either. How can this
be fixed? I have already reset IE settings, deleted cache and this has not
helped.

It's very possible your computer is infected: One of the tricks malware
likes to pull is to change your default search engine.

One of the the new features of IE 8 is the ambiguously titled "User
Preference Control," whose role is to alert you when something is trying
to change your default search provider.

Run a /thorough/ check for hijackware, including posting the requested logs
in an appropriate forum.

If the procedures look too complex - and there is no shame in admitting this
isn't your cup of tea - take the machine to a local, reputable and
independent (i.e., not BigBoxStoreUSA or Geek Squad) computer repair shop.
