IE8 .wpl Not Working as Before

I have an intranet website that provides links to audio (.mp3) files. This
is done using a hyperlink to a .wpl file.

After upgrading to IE8 on both WindowsXp and Vista, the .wpl plays all the
files. But the WMP11 play list pane only shows a single entry for the .wpl
link name itself. With earlier versions of IE, including IE7, the play list
pane would include and entry for each item in the play list.

Is there a way to remedy this other than converting each .wpl to another
file format?
