Desktop Lost In IE 8

The entire desktop material was lost during upgrade from IE 7. It appeared
in the trash can and was lost in restore to desktop. Fortunately, for me the
restore function put everything back to IE 7. Frightening, and of course
there was not advisory this could happen from MS.

I wonder why it didn't happen to me?
