What anti-virus application or security suite is installed, is your
subscription current, and is it supported in IE8? What anti-spyware
applications (other than Defender)? What third-party firewall (if any)?
Were any of these applications running in the background when you installed
and/or uninstalled IE8?

Has a Norton or McAfee application ever been installed on this machine
(e.g., a free-trial version that came preinstalled when you bought it)?

Do you have an available Restore Point predating the install of IE8?

I use Avast antivirus & it is up to date. I don't use a 3rd party firewal.
Defender is running in the background.

BEFORE I installed IE 8, I didn't have any problems accessing my e-mails
from IE 6. AFTER I installed IE 8, I couldn't log onto IE 8 to check my
e-mails. AFTER I uninstalled IE 8, I couldn't log onto to IE 6 check my
e-mails. Somehow, IE 8 screwed up IE 6 so I couldn't check my e-mails.

Windows didn't create a Restore point & I didn't manually create a Restore
point.

It's annoying, but no big deal because I prefer Firefox anyway. I installed
a plugin that switches from Firefox to IE if Firefox has a problem displaying
a web page correctly.

Actually, it is a big deal: IE is an integral part of the Windows OS. If
IE's not working properly, Windows isn't either.

I didn't have any problems installing IE 8.

I haven't had any problems with Windows. I didn't have any problems AT ALL
using IE 6 to access my e-mail BEFORE I installed IE 8. AFTER I installed IE
8, I couldn't access my e-mail with IE 8. AFTER I uninstalled IE 8, I
couldn't access my e-mail with IE 6. What other explanation is there?
Somehow, IE 8 screwed up the settings of IE 6. I noticed that IE 8 still
manages the Favorites the same way as older versions of IE. I like the way
Firefox manages bookmarks. That's why I prefer Firefox.

The fact the you didn't have any problems installing IE8 does not
necessarily mean it was installed properly.

Similarly, the fact the you may not have had any problems uninstalling IE8
does not necessarily mean it was uninstalled properly or completely or that
Windows isn't working properly now.

Yes.

Well, if XP starts crashing & locking up & stuff, then I'll format the hard
drive & reinstall XP. I'm personally of the school of thought that it is a
good idea to periodically reinstall XP. (I think that it's called Windows
rot.) I want to build a PC with Vista, & I've been thinking about ways that I
can easily reinstall Vista. Right now, I want to create an image after I
install Vista & periodically create images.

Why are you so defensive of IE? I've tried Safari, Chrome, IE, Netscape &
Opera & my personal preference is Firefox.

IE installs/uninstalls are most successful if you disable all real-time
"system protections" (e.g., anti-virus; anti-spyware; third-party firewalls)
and enable the Windows Firewall prior to installing/uninstalling. Ditto for
all Windows Service Packs.

Back in the Win4.x days (e.g., Win98), your preference for doing periodic
"clean installs" made a little bit of sense IMHO but the same cannot be said
of Win5.x (WinXP) and higher.

I couldn't care less which browser you or anyone else uses. I do care about
maintaining and securing Windows OS (which includes IE as a literal part of
the OS) properly. I do care if users install major system upgrades (e.g.,
IE8) without doing some reading beforehand.
