IE7 won't load pages
i'm having sporatic trouble loading web pages with IE7. sometimes,
everything works fine. other times, the page appears to just time
out. i don't get any kind of error, and the browser is still
completely responsive, but the page just never loads.
i'm running XPPro with SP3.
i took a wireshark of a good load and a bad load. it appears in the
failure case that there is the SYN, the SYN/ACK response, and my ACK
response. however, the GET is never sent.
in the one failure case that i was able to capture, immediately
following these three messages, there was a GET to another page that
appears to be MS related. the IP was 65.55.15.243, and the page was /
ADSAdClient31.dll?GetAd=&PG=IMUSX1. i don't know if this is related
or not. could be something else on my machine was trying to do
something on port 80 (which was the filter on my capture). i do know
that i didn't explicitly have any other browsers open.
i haven't tried this on any other browsers, as it's too random to know
if it is just a coincidence that another browser would work, or if it
wasn't an issue outside of IE.
i'll try to get another capture of a failure for comparison, but don't
know when it will happen again.
if anyone has any ideas, i'm all ears.

ADSAdClient31.dll is apparently an MSN ad server applet. Google search shows
it has been cropping up as a problem in various situations for about a year.
That includes other browsers and apps which display ads. Occurrence seems
pretty random, maybe a bad web page script or cached file or even an
ad/pop-up blocker issue. System restore fixed it for at least one person.
Sorry, no other ideas.

i've looked through the article that you recommended, and don't see
anything that looks like it applies to my situation.
- step 1 doesn't apply since there is no error screen that ever
appears. it just appears to be infinitely loading.
- step 2
- method 1 doesn't apply, as when IE is in a "bad mood", all sites
are affected, not just the one i was trying to access.
- method 2 - everything else still works. i can ping the web site
in question, and also remote desktop to another machine (which can
then view the web site in question). so, the hardware/cabling is all
valid.
- method 3 - again, other protocols still work.
i appreciate the help. any other thoughts?

i had considered bad pages, but once IE starts exhibiting this issue
in a given window, it continues to have problems until i open a new
window. no matter which site if visit. i can't see that many sites
having trouble all at once, then just all getting better at the same
time. this feels like something more on my side, but i really out of
ideas.

What about the DNS lookup? Is it being redone each time or is it cached?
Is it cached by dnscache? (E.g. as seen by ipconfig /displaydns )
If so, is the IP address that IE is using one of those found in the cache
or an even older one? Supposedly IE maintains its own internal DNS lookup.
Then it would be possible that it may not be refreshed often enough and thus
cause your symptom. A workaround would be to close IE when the wrong
lookup was being used.

If you're just looking at the HTTP, Fiddler2 would be an easier diagnostic
to interpret and use. Fiddler can give you a different perspective on your
symptoms too. E.g. you can see clearly when a request is being sent
and not getting any response. I think it also shows the IP addresses
being used.

Does "open a new window" imply that you close the old one
and start a new task? If so you would be changing the
active connection counts (e.g. as seen by netstat -ap tcp )
If that is the issue, then if your connection type is broadband
you might see a change of symptom by switching to IE8.
