Re: Windows Mail attachments won't open after installing IE8
Hi Steve,
to me it's still not clear if you really "opened" the JPGs by clicking
on the attachment icon (paper clip).
The images show fine in/below a message in the preview and still they
may crash.
As said before: It may take a while until the problem appears and JPGs
may be opened fine but crash later. And once they crashed, other file
types may crash too.
The whole thing indeed is a TIF corruption problem but not only that.
There's other factors too - mainly the path specified for running
WinMail.
Changing the path in the StartMenu's shortcut helps (reported by others
too).
And some applications (contrary to the simple error message fro JPGs)
clearly show that the file "C:\Windows\System32\MyFile.ppt" could not be
opened.
And OE-Quotefix seriously affects the situation. Starting WinMail with
OELaunch is a straight route into the problem.
Calling WinMail separately first and then OE Quotefix later mostly is
OK.
Moving the TIF (as you suggested earlier in this thread) has the same
effect as deleting thee "Content.OE5" directories and re-booting or
creating a new user account and working from there.
Things are fine for a while. Using OELaunch again will re-create the
problem.
The whole thing is a mystery.
I'll make a fresh install on my test-machine and try to put together a
comprehensive report.

Re: Windows Mail attachments won't open after installing IE8
Since OE-QuoteFix hasn't been updated since August 2003, I'm
not surprised it causes compatibility problems in Vista.
I'm not familiar with OELaunch.

It works pretty fine with WinMail (at least prior to installing IE8). No
problems at all with Vista.
And I could hardly work with WinMail without it ;-)
> I'm not familiar with OELaunch.
OELauch is just the normal way to start OE together with the Quotefix
add-on. It works the same way with WinMail.

Re: Windows Mail attachments won't open after installing IE8
Its clear to me that that is what I did. You cannot generalize the issue
based upon your experience alone and draw unwarranted conclusions. It is
unclear that the problem has to do with TIF corruption, which is why I'm
trying to get users to try moving the TIF and see if the IE8 problems go
away. So far, no one else has claimed they did. So conclusions can only be
drawn after time to see what fixes the issue.

Re: Windows Mail attachments won't open after installing IE8
I'm sorry Steve, it seems that my wording might have been
misunderstable.
For sure what happens on my side may not be generalized.
And I fully agree that we would need more reports from other folks. Too
sad that so far no one reported back on your suggestion of moving the
TIF :-( :-(

We just have to wait and see. If I could reproduce the issue, it would
help, but I couldn't.

Did you try installing and using OE-QuoteFix? <EG>

Great!!!
Thanks for pointing to that!
AFAICS OE-Quotefix the real culprit.
But it's not that alone!!

Re: Windows Mail attachments won't open after installing IE8
I have had an intermittent problem where I am unable to open
attachments (JPG files) when using Vista mail. This started after I
upgraded to IE8. I am running Vista Ultimate x64 and Avast security.
The error message I get is "Windows cannot find xxx.jpg"
The last 3 times this happened I was able to solve the problem by
deleteing my temporary internet files. Once I did that I was able to
open the attached JPG file. The problem keeps reoccuring however.

Re: Windows Mail attachments won't open after installing IE8
[X-post to Vista Mail newsgroup]
See this archived discussion:

Have you moved your Temporary Internet Files and/or TEMP folder to a
non-default location?
What anti-virus application or security suite is installed, is your
subscription current, and is it supported in IE8? What anti-spyware
applications (other than Defender)? What third-party firewall (if any)?
Were any of these applications running in the background when you installed
IE8?
Has a Norton or McAfee application ever been installed on this machine
(e.g., a free-trial version that came preinstalled when you bought it)?
