Browser HiJack problem
I have a very interesting situation. My browser (IE 7) sometime does not go
where it should. It is very strange. Most of the time it works perfectly
and others it goes to various search engine pages.

Also, the Windows Update goes to google. I cannot even update Windows!!!

I have done various virus scans (Norton) and spy-ware scans (Ad-aware) and
there was nothing more than a few cookies, which have been removed.

Any ideas?

RE: Browser HiJack problem
Have you tried MalwareBytes? http://www.malwarebytes.org

I have fought with various hijacks with this successfully.

Also Hijackthis from TrenMicro
http://www.trendsecure.com/portal/en...ols/hijackthis

Be careful with Hijackthis because if you do not know what you are doing it
can cause problems.

Re: Browser HiJack problem
There's not a doubt in my mind that you're seeing the affects of a
hijackware infection, despite what the Norton and Ad-Aware scans reported.

Which leads me to ask what, if any, anti-virus application was installed on
the computer when this problem started, David? Is/was your subscription
current?

1. See if you can download/run the MSRT manually:
http://www.microsoft.com/security/ma...e/default.mspx

NB: Run the FULL scan, not the QUICK scan!

2. WinXP ONLY!! => Run the Windows Live Safety Center's 'Protection' scan
(only!) in Safe Mode with Networking, if need be:
http://onecare.live.com/site/en-us/center/howsafe.htm

3. Run a /thorough/ check for hijackware, including posting the requested
logs in an appropriate forum, not here.

If the procedures look too complex - and there is no shame in admitting this
isn't your cup of tea - take the machine to a local, reputable and
independent (i.e., not BigBoxStoreUSA) computer repair shop.
