IE8 and Read Mail button/Outlook Express
I am running XP SP3. I was running IE 7 and using the Read Mail button to
access Outlook Express for my e-mail. I upgraded yesterday to IE 8 and now
the Read Mail button doesn't do anything. How do I access OE?
Thanks, Haddox

You might try this, using the Run box type(or copy and paste) the following
into the Run box and click OK:
"C:\Program Files\Outlook Express\msimn.exe" /reg
Good luck,

Your desktop doesn't have a shortcut for OE?
The program is called msimn.exe. And, it is located in C:/Program
Files/Outlook Express/. Just make a shortcut to the program.

It doesn't work for Thunderbird either on IE8.
I've got Thunderbird set as the default email client in XP(though
Control Panel, default programmes), and in IE8 (Tools/Internet
Options/Programmes).
Thunderbird opens as the email client in XP, Word, Windows Explorer, etc.
Clicking on the mail icon in IE8 and nothing happens.
Another bug in IE8 to add to the list.
I thought the beta releases were supposed to find, sort out, and fix
these bugs?

If you really need to drag a shortcut from your Start menu
or Quick Launch tray (etc.) to %USERPROFILE%\Favorites\Links
Then you can use it as a button in your Favorites Bar (aka Links bar).
Also, note if you already do have such shortcuts that you could
make them universally accessible by assigning shortcut keystrokes
for them. Similarly, if you have a specialized keyboard or mouse
you may also find that you can program a key or button to launch OE
from *anywhere* not just from an IE window. For example on my
keyboard I just press Mail.
BTW I reported this symptom in IE8b2 and it got Closed: No Repro.
Here's a specific observation I made in my incident report (387782)
<quote>
IE8b2 + XPsp3. Clicking Read Mail button (for OE) does nothing.
ProcMon shows that this is the last instance of the word Mail
RegOpenKey HKLM\Software\Clients\Mail\\shell\Open\command INVALID PARAMETER Desired Access: Query Value
One apparent error from that is it is missing a level of indexing.
E.g. I suspect it should be looking for that value (Default) here:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Clients\Mail\Outlook Express\shell\open\command
</quote>
Is that your case too?
