IE8 doesn't allow ActiveX on Windows Update
I downloaded IE8 last night and installed it. When I tried to run Windows
Update, I found I needed to download an ActiveX module to run it.
Unfortunately, there was no "yellow bar" for downloading the ActiveX module,
so I checked the two suggestions for dealing with the problem: one suggested
I log off and log back on an Administrator account and try again (which
didn't work), while the other told me to go to Microsoft (Windows) Update and
download the module--making an infinite loop! How do I allow the ActiveX
module to appear so I can download it--is there some setting on IE8 that I
can change to allow ActiveX downloads?

Cannot reproduce here.

Can you confirm that you were able to reach & use Windows Update website
before you installed IE8?

Is Automatic Updates enabled?

What anti-virus application or security suite is installed and is your
subscription current? What anti-spyware applications (other than Defender)?
What third-party firewall (if any)? Were any of these applications running
in the background when you installed IE8?

Has a Norton or McAfee application ever been installed on this machine
(e.g., a free-trial version that came preinstalled when you bought it)?
