Links to Windows Media Player no longer work

I have Internet Explorer version 7.0.6001.18000 and Vista.

In the past, when I was on any site where there was a link to a video, I
would click the link and Windows Media Player would open and play the video.

Some weeks ago, however, whenever I clicked on such a link, I got the
message 'Page cannot be displayed. (If I click on the same links using
Firefox, it downloads and plays the video in Windows Media Player OK.)

Windows Media Player works fine on its own.

Can anyone tell me what is causing this problem, please, and what I need to
do to sort it out?

This indicates that the file association chain is likely broken. What apps
were installed around when this broke?
