windows update is redirected to google - can't fix
Unable to get windows updates. When clicking windows update, I am sent to a
Google site. I have spent several hours and many emails with a level 2
engineer at Trend Micro - he unable to locate any viruses. He suggested that
I contact Microsoft inasmuch as it is the Microsoft site that is being
redirected.
Moreover, I am not able to update Trend virus patterns nor can I update
Avira. Seems all of the AV software is blocked from updating. I replaced my
hard drive and reinstalled WinXP 2sp several times, but virus returns.
I am desperate for a solution to this horrendous problem.

Please help.

Thanks.

Is Google Toolbar installed? Try a Reset:

If no joy, you may be seeing the affects of a hijackware infection (cf.
http://aumha.net/viewtopic.php?f=48&t=37919).

1. See if you can download/run the MSRT manually:
http://www.microsoft.com/security/ma...e/default.mspx

2. Run this online scan (in safe mode w/networking, if need be):
http://onecare.live.com/site/en-us/center/howsafe.htm

3. Run additional checks for hijackware, including posting your hijackthis
log to an appropriate forum.

When all else fails, HijackThis v2.0.2
(http://aumha.org/downloads/hijackthis.exe) is the preferred tool to use (in
conjuction with some other utilities). HijackThis will NOT fix anything on
its own, but it will help you to both identify and remove any
hijackware/spyware with assistance from an expert. **Post your log to
http://spywarehammer.com/simplemachi...php?board=10.0,
http://forums.spybot.info/forumdisplay.php?f=22,
http://aumha.net/viewforum.php?f=30, or another appropriate forum for review
by an expert in such matters, not here.**

If the procedures look too complex - and there is no shame in admitting this
isn't your cup of tea - take the machine to a local, reputable and
independent (i.e., not BigBoxStoreUSA) computer repair shop.

RE: windows update is redirected to google - can't fix
I have had a very similar problem.
Windows update kept reporting that it couldn't update my system, and if I
tried to navigate to the microsoft update site with IE, it kept being
re-directed to Google.

I use Fsecure anti virus which has been kept up to date with automatic
updates.
Despite this my system was still compromised.
I raised a support request with Fsecure almost a week ago, and they still
haven't replied to me.

I managed to fix it by downloading Superantispyware free edition.
It noted that I had two Trojan DNS changers and removed them.

Windows update is now working fine, and my browser is no longer redirected.

Thanks to Superantispyware, and shame on you Fsecure!!!
I now intend to purchase Superantispyware, as it seems to be a great product.

I hope this info helps others.
