Your security software is not allowing the installer to write to the
registry. This is common, and the reason we recommend that people
temporarily disable their security software when installing updates from
Microsoft.

Hi,
1. Is Zone Alarm installed? You may have to uninstall ZA, instead of merely
disabling it at startup.

2. In http://support.microsoft.com/kb/917925 Did you work through Method D?

Method D: Reset permissions for any unwriteable registry subkeys

To complete this method, follow these steps:
Download the SubInACL tool from the Microsoft Web site. To do this, follow
these steps:

Re: can't install IE7 on Win XP sp3.
Required reading IMHO before installing IE7:

Sandi's Installation Tips <= Steps #1-8, #10 & #11; take note of #12, then
STOP!
http://www.ie-vista.com/known_issues.html#pre-install
(ignore any references to Vista)

And I strongly recommend using
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/dow.../getitnow.mspx as the
installation source, not Automatic/Windows Update.

Alternately, use this Direct Download link:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...0-081805b2f90b

Tip: Save the installer to your desktop, do not Run it.

Make *certain* that you check in at Windows Update immediately after
installing IE7 and install any critical updates offered. If Optional
Updates category offers Root Certificates update, I recommend installing it
to take full advantage of IE7's additional security.

Hi,
You've downloaded and saved the IE7 Installation file, right? You aren't
allowing Windows Update to install IE7.

Since you only have one unwriteable registry key, try this...
1. Backup the registry by creating a System Restore Point.
2. Run regedit and drill down to the problem key:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Interface\{34A715A0-6587-11D0-924A-0020AFC7AC4D}
3. Right-click that key> Permissions.
4. Give System and Administrators Full Control. Click OK.
5. Close regedit and restart.
6. Right-click the IE7 Installer file and choose "Run as administrator."
