IE6 now hangs before complicating page load.
Hi,
A couple of days ago I went to the Windows Update site and installed all of
the critical updates, several windows update and several IE updates.
After doing that IE6 started hanging on various sites, including Microsoft's
site. It will hang while showing that it's downloading something in the
status pane.
Clicking the stop tool bar button has no effect. Trying to move or close
the window has no effect.
The task manager says Internet Explorer is not responding.
The task manager will end the task, after putting up a dialog saying that
it's not responding and asking if I want to terminate it now.
I have tried reinstalling IE6 from a CD. No change. I have tried
uninstalling the critical updates that I had installed. Not all of them are
listed in the add/remove programs. The ones that were had no effect.
I am thinking that the only option left is to fdisk and reinstall
everything; which will be a long involved process and probably a total mess.
Why can't IE be a separate program that can be uninstalled and reinstalled
like other applications, like say MS Word.
Anyone have any less traumatic ideas?
My configuration:
IE 6.0.2800.1106 SP 1
Windows 2000; 5.00.2195; SP 4
Did have all of the latest updates, see above.

Re: IE6 now hangs before complicating page load.
Hi Gary,
Do you have the Developer Toolbar or the IE DOM Explorer installed? (these
are Addons for developers)
What happens when you disable Toolbars and Browser Helpers (Start>Control
Panel>Internet Options - Advanced tab, uncheck "Enable third-party browser
extensions") and restart the browser?
If that solves the problem, then check for updates for the Toolbars and
Browser Helpers that you have installed from their vendors.
You can test and update your Flash components from

Is Automatic Updates enabled? Which updates were installed? How long had
it been since you checked for &installed updates?
What third-party toolbars are installed?
Try a Reset:

Not those.
I did have IE Watch., but I uninstalled that and it made no difference.

No difference.
It's very reproducible. I go to Microsoft.com and then to the download
center and then that download page hangs. Sometimes only the header
displays and sometimes, like now, nothing, just a white window with the
download progress bar at about 99%. And if I drag another window over IE
and then off, IE does not repaint it's window.

No, I periodically do a manual update.
I like to know when things are being installed in case there is a problem.
And this is the first problem I've had related to updates.

No tool bars.
IE Watch add on was installed. Also, I have the latest version of that add
on.
I don't recall any other add ons. I also don't see any way to get a list of
installed addons.

Still hangs. Actually just now it hung on the Microsoft home page.

Re: IE6 now hangs before complicating page load.

I would strongly recommmend that you enable Automatic Updates and select the
"Notify me before downloading any updates and notify me again before
installing them on my computer" configuration. That way, you'll know when a
critical and/or out-of-band update is available but you'll control which
updates are downloaded, which updates are installed, and when they're
installed.
Since the behavior appears to have started after installing those updates, I
would recommend that you...
Start a free Windows Update support incident request
https://support.microsoft.com/oas/de...spx?gprid=6527
[The fact that IE Watch was installed when you installed the updates may
have played a role here. If so, uninstalling IE Watch probably won't fix
it.]
For home users, no-charge support is available by calling 1-866-PCSAFETY in
the United States and in Canada or by contacting your local Microsoft
subsidiary. There is no-charge for support calls that are associated with
security updates. When you call, clearly state that your problem is related
to a Security Update and cite the update's KB number (e.g., KB999999).
If your problem relates to a Cumulative Security Update for IE (e.g.,
KB958215), call the above number and ask to be transferred to the "Consumer
IE queue" (which is 47830).
Support for Windows Update:
http://support.microsoft.com/gp/wusupport
For more information about how to contact your local Microsoft subsidiary
for security update support issues, visit the International Support Web
site: http://support.microsoft.com/common/international.aspx
For enterprise customers, support for security updates is available through
your usual support contacts.

In your OS IE6sp1 can be uninstalled but you may have to uninstall
some OS service packs if they were installed later to make it show
up in the Add/Remove Programs list.

Your OS also provides IE's Repair tool.
E.g. either via Add/Remove Programs or via Run...
rundll32.exe setupwbv.dll,IE6Maintenance
Hope I got that right. I haven't had to type it in here in a long time. ; )

Re: IE6 now hangs before complicating page load.
Hi,
Actually this whole incident makes me very leery about applying any future
updates.
>
> [The fact that IE Watch was installed when you installed the updates may

Well, so, maybe if I reapply the updates with IEWatch not installed???
Actually IE Watch has never given me any trouble in the past. And it's
about the only way to see the HTTP headers, and HTTPS headers in clear text.
>
> For home users, no-charge support ...
Problem, I'm not a home user. I'm SOHO. And this is an MSDN version
windows.
>
> If your problem relates to a Cumulative Security Update for IE (e.g.,
> KB958215), call the above number and ask to be transferred to the

Going by the list I provided, I have no idea which of those updates maybe
have triggered the problem. It could have been one of the OS updates that
somehow relates to IE.
Some more information:
It usually hangs with this in the status line:
Opening page
http://view.atdmt.com/mrt/iview.mscm...rect/01?click=...
Now that I think on it, isn't it a little strange that it's trying to load
something from a third party site?
Also, you cross posted to public.windowsupdate.
I took a peek over there and another post there caught my eye. It mentioned
HijackThis so just for grins I tried that. Then to my surprise a couple
spurious registry entries turned up. There was one for a browser helper
that I had no knowledge of. Nothing on disk so the entry was going no where
(File missing). I guess something tried to install it's self but my AV
prevented it from succeeding.
Anyway, I cleaned that up but the issue still persists.
Since there doesn't seem to be any way of reinstalling IE by it's self,
would an inplace reinstall of the OS work? I've seen that recommended for
XP.
Needless to say, I'm not very thrilled about a fresh install and having to
then reinstalling the various versions of Visual Studio and Office and
Visio, and everything else. Not to mention the lost work time.

Re: IE6 now hangs before completing page load. - update
Today's update.
I took yesterday off and left my machine powered off for the day.
Now today it doesn't seem to be hanging on that download page.
Sometimes a style sheet on the main Microsoft soft page doesn't load, that's
new, but it doesn't hang.
So, I guess we'll see what happens elsewhere.
Kind of odd though since I had rebooted several times before this.
