no longer down load files and need help

When attempting to download a file I clicked the do not display this message
again box at the bottom of the "open" "save" pop up and cliked open instead
of save. I can no longer down load files and need help in reversing my error.

Can't guess what versions of Internet Explorer and Windows you have.
Here are instructions for IE 6 on Windows XP:

Control Panel > Internet Options > Security tab > Internet Zone >
Automatic prompting for file downloads > checkmark in Enable
