IE7 opens blank page in response to CTL+Click on link
PC
Dell Dimension 8200 with Intel P4 2.26GHz, 0.5GB RDRAM, new in 2002
Situation
Have just done complete system reload after reformattting disk. Re-installed
XP home, SP3, Microsoft updates, Anti-virus, etc. All seems fine except IE7.
Before reload
IE7 worked fine, though system had become very, very slow.
Problem after reload
On clicking a link, whilst holding down CONTROL, causes IE7 & to open a new
tab with a blank page (instead of the page addressed by link). I have used
ADD/REMOVE software to remove IE7 which left me with IE6. IE6 seemed to work
correctly. I then re-installed IE7 from Microsoft update site (version for
XP2, that is defined as suitable for XP3 in SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS). I saved
installation file to desktop & ran. Alas, the same problem reappeared when I
use CONTROL+CLICK on a link.
Any advice please?

RE: IE7 opens blank page in response to CTL+Click on link
CORRECTION TO INITIAL POST
I previously stated that Ctl+ click on a link opens a new tab with a blank
page - this is incorrect.
Actually, Ctl+click on link opens another version of IE7 (ie new IE7 icon
appears in task bar) & new version of IE7 contains a blank page.

Re: IE7 opens blank page in response to CTL+Click on link
Which was installed first, IE7 or WinXP SP3?
Open Windows Explorer to C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer <=this folder |
Right-click on the file IEXPLORE.EXE | Properties | Version: What version is
listed here?
What anti-virus application or security suite is installed? What
anti-spyware applications (other than Defender)? What third-party firewall
(if any)?

See if you have some nVidia software installed that you
could do without. (E.g. using Control Panel)

Re: IE7 opens blank page in response to CTL+Click on link
SEQUENCE
1. Clean re-install from Dell re-installation CD for XP home
2. Updates via Microsoft update site which I believe installed SP2 then SP3.
Control panel ABOUT shows v5.1(build 2600.xpsp.080413-2111 : Service Pack 3).
I assume this update installed IE7 .
3. Installed Grisoft AVG + various applications
4. Discovered IE7 CTL+click problem
5. Used Control panel ADD/REMOVE SOFTWARE to remove IE7 which left me with
IE6.
7. Updated IE to IE7 via Microsoft update site.
8. CTL+click problem still present & opens new version of IE with blank page.
IE7 VERSION
Version: 7.0.5730.13, update version: 0
FIREWALL
Using Thomson Speedtouch530 with built in firewall. Windows firewall is
disabled.
ANTI-VIRUS & SPYWARE PROTECTION
Grisoft AVG
Lavasoft Ad-Aware- manual activation
CCleaner- manual activation
NEW INFO
Have now discovered that "CTL+ click with scroll wheel" does work
correctly & opens a link url in a new tabbed window. (Immediate question is:
Is CTL-key faulty? Answer: its OK & does correct action for CTL+C & CTL+V).
Regards & thanks for your help

Re: IE7 opens blank page in response to CTL+Click on link
1. Control panel ADD/REMOVE SOFTWARE shows only Display Driver from Nvidia.
2. Control panel shows icon for NVidia nView desktop manager.
3. Device manager shows Nvidia driver date: 6/10/03, version 5.2.1.6
Thanks for your help

For Robert who seems to have hit the nail on the head => Does this behavior
persist if you disable Nvidia Desktop Manager? See
