Transparent pull-down menus

I am using IE 7.0.6001.18000 on Vista, and some of the pull-down menus (in
particular Favorites and the menu labelled >> to the right of the Page menu)
are transparent (a shadow appears around where the menu should appear, but
the menu itself doesn't). Although I suspect the problem has something to do
with the Google toolbar, the problem persists even if I disable or uninstall
the Google toolbar. It also persists when I reset all IR options (using
Tools>Internet Options>Advanced>Reset...). I haven't found any mention of a
similar problem, and of course I cannot just re-install IE on Vista in any
obvious way. Suggestions?

I've just noticed that the problem goes away if Protected Mode is disabled,
and reappears when it is enabled again. A clue, perhaps?

Start IE7 without add-ons from:
Right-click the IE icon on the desktop. Choose Start without add-ons.
or
Programs> Accessories> System tools> Internet Explorer (no add-ons)
If the problem goes away, check for an incompatible add-on.

Or, the Protected Mode information suggests that a program other than a
browser add-on may be involved.

Starting IE7 without add-ons does not solve the problem.
Running IE7 as Administrator DOES solve the problem.
Running IE7 while logged in as another used (Guest) does not solve the
problem.

Following a suggestion at
Vista, with sloooooow IE7 Favorites and web pages when Protected Mode enabled
I tried uninstalling ScanSoft Omnipage and the problem went away. Can anyone
suggest why this should be so?
