lost system administrator rights in IE7
Hi,

after installing IE7 on my Windows XP Home SP2 machine I cannot change the
start page any more nor are any other options in this pane accessible.

At the bottom of the page I am informed that some settings are administered
by the system administrator but I am the only person using this computer and
hence I am the administrator.

I didn't observe any other restrictions yet. I have TrendMicro's Internet
Security Suite, SpyProtector as well as SUPERAntiSpyware permanently running
and they don't report any problem.

What can I try to get the system administrator rights back in IE 7?

Thanks so much for your help.

Christiane

Re: lost system administrator rights in IE7
You may have a horked (dirty; bad; flawed) install of IE7. I suggest that
you...

1. Uninstall IE7 (which automatically returns you to IE6) EXACTLY per
http://www.ie-vista.com/kbase2.html [Only use the Command
%windir%\ie7\spuninst\spuninst.exe if you cannot uninstall via Add/Remove
Programs!]

2a. Uninstall all toolbars and third-party Windows Themes (including Window
Blinds).

2b. Disable all Norton Add-ons, if applicable.

3. Reinstall IE7 EXACTLY per
http://www.ie-vista.com/known_issues.html#pre-install <= Steps #1-8, #10 &
#11; take note of #12, then STOP!

NB: Use http://www.microsoft.com/windows/downloads/default.mspx as the
installation source, not Automatic/Windows Update.

Or Direct Download link:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...0-081805b2f90b

Tip: Save the installer to your desktop, do not Run it.

4. IMMEDIATELY go to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com and install any
critical updates offered. If a "Root Certificates" update is listed in the
Optional category, you might install it, too, to take full advantage of
IE7's additional security.

You haven't exactly proved that you don't have them...

If you had gpedit.msc you could use the Internet Explorer Maintenance
Group Policy settings. Unfortunately, I think XP Home users don't have
that tool. I guess they have to use RegEdit perhaps guided by RegMon? ; }

Good luck

And then He Said:
" If you had gpedit.msc you could use the Internet Explorer Maintenance
Group Policy settings. ""< font size for Gordon="100">Unfortunately, I think

Some people can use a third party security policy to assign permissions.

Re: lost system administrator rights in IE7
How can I get my administrator rights back. I am a novice when it comes to
this kind of thing. I sign in as an administrator because of XP but when I
try to use my DVD/CD drives (2 internal, one external), or external hard
drives I receive a message I don't have access to them, I must see my
administrator.

(FollowUp-To set to XP Security only)

Please note that you are piggybacking onto a cross-posted thread
which originated in the IE General NG. I don't think that this question
has anything to do with IE so I suggest we drop the IE NG from the
cross-post. I have set FollowUp-To to assist with that. I'm not sure that
the web interface that you are using respects that request but you could
edit the newsgroups list in any additional reply to make sure it doesn't
include the IE NG again.

Otherwise since your post really only has partial relevance to the original
subject I suggest you start a new thread in the Security NG only with a more
descriptive subject about your specific symptoms.

I do not subscribe to the Security NG, so probably will not see any replies
to this post.

Good luck

Robert
