I am having trouble with wireless mouse

Well this my first of many questions that vista has created so here goes. I had bought a wireless mouse some time ago and was told it would work with my computer(it is a gateway). Surprise it did not, so I have been using and am still using a wired mouse. Now my keyboard had stopped working (this also was wired) and I went out to get a new one. When I got home I saw that it a wireless combo pack.It included a wireless mouse along with the wireless keyboard. I decided that I would give a try and found that the keyboard does work but alas the mouse does not. Why would the wireless keyboard work and not the mouse. There was not disk to install and all drivers are updated to my knowledge.
