Reticent new Vista user

My new HP Pavillion came to me without the option of XP Pro which I sorely miss. Nonetheless, technology marches on and I have to adapt. That said I have figured out some aspects of it, being a bit of a propellor head, but there are some that are perplexing and frustrating me. I will post two requests and would appreciate any help I can get from anyone in this forum.
