Explorer 7 & 8 locks Vista

Vista 32 bit has been locking up Win Explorer 7 and also 8. Even using Explorer without add-ons is locking up Vista. Every time explorer is activated Vista locks up. I must use Task Manager to regain control. I'm having to utilize Mozilla Firefox now which does not allow the functionality of IE7 (when it works). What can I do to regain use of IE7 in Vista?
