Recording sound

Hi:
Just joined the forum while searching for the answer to "How can I add a sound recording into MS clip organizer?"

I want to record a choir anthem tomorrow and make it the background for a slide show of our church anniversary celebration. I may have access to the sound board but no recorder exists, I have been told. So I thought I would use my onboard mic on my compaq. The external mic has a loud hum.

So my workaround was to be: open Power Point, Click on record, name file, etc. then "record".

If Compaq does not, my old IBM music laptop will do OK with Nero, but thought I might get better sound with newer equipment.
