Trying to install Vista upgrade

I am trying to install Vista Home Premium Express sent to me by HP along with a disc labeled HP Upgrade Assistant. When I insert HP Ugrade Assistant I get a message that This version Windows is not supported. I am running Windows XP which came on this computer that was advertised Vista Ready. Can anyone help me?

I have contacted HP support but so far they haven't told me what to do with this HP Assistant that doesn't work, they don't seem to understand the question.
