New vista user

Hi I'm a win.xp user, graphic designer that hate computer problems, errors, and not very good in following instructions, just not a tech gal.
Anyways, I have a vista home basic that I like to use as my main computer. So far I have problem installing outlook 2003-saying something
not being compatible. I also have problem opening some files-using corel x3, I suspect slow processor but I'm not certain. I have 446mb ram, pentium 4cpu, 3.00 GHz, 32-bit OS, 225gb disk space. If anyone can analyze why some files would not open up-I mean it will open but not show the image and such. Help! Help! anyone.
