Internet Explorer opening new tabs

Please can someone tell me how to stop Internet explorer from opening new tabs, for example when trying to read emails a new window opens displaying content from a web site that I have never visited.

If it is just randomly opening tabs or windows and those windows are in some sort of a advertisement it is possible your computer is infected with a form of mal or adware. Download or run a security scan to see.
