VPN connects but........

Just set up my home computer to accept VPN connections in the hope of being able to access my home network from abroad. I am new to this stuff so please refrain from laughing too hard. After setting up my laptop, as well as my parent's computer as clients I thought everything was good. The computers connect with no problem. Now how do I access the shares on my home desktop (the computer configured for incoming connections). I've scoured the internet trying to locate how to use the VPN once everything is connected. Not much good having the network if I can't access the files. The permissions should be good, since I am able to share across my LAN at home with no issue. Does the VPN have to connect to a domain?
