DVDRW compatability

I have an LG external DVDRW drive (model No GSA-2166D)
The LG product support site only offers firmware updates for Windows 2000/xp op system
How can I get this to work on my laptop running Vista Home Basic.
It is extremely annoying as the unit is not very old yet appears now to be redundant.
