DVD / CD Drive Missing

Hi...

I'm a real newbie, so please be gentle... lol

When I go to Computer, I see the following:

Local Disk C:
HP_Recovery D:
Norton Backup Drive

When I go to Device Manager, I see no entry for DVD/CD drive.

When I go to Windows Media Player, no CD drive is detected.

I tried shutting down and restarting my HP laptop... but that didn't help.

Can someone please push me in the right direction to solve this?

Open the case and check/change the ribbon cable. They obviously have power but the IDE cable may be faulty, also chek in the device manager, drop down view and check "show hidden devices". Also there is an icon on the task bar for scanning for new devices. You might be able to do a system restore to an earlier time and get them back.
Also see if they are seen in the BIOS setup screen
