Sony NEC Optiarc AD-7170A Issues

I can see the drive under "My Computer" but I cannot access any disc that I insert into it. The disc spins non-stop and Vista hangs until I eject it.

I tested the drive on an XP system and it seemed to read fine.

Is this drive simply not compatible with Vista 64bit or is there something I'm not doing right? The firmware is 1.05, the drivers were installed by Vista, and the relevant system specs are as follows:

Windows Vista Ultimate 64bit
Intel Core 2 Duo 2.66ghz
ASUS P5K Mobo

I also checked Microsoft's Compatibility Website: Windows Quality Online Services: Windows Vista Logo'd Products List and it was not listed as a Vista compatible device.

I just went ahead and purchased:

LG GH22NS30 DVD Burner

It is listed as fully compatible, but we'll see about that. The other difference between this one and the previous drive (AD-7170A) is that the LG drive is SATA whereas the 7170A was PATA.

Sidenote: I really, really, really dislike Windows Vista.

Update: Windows Vista 64 recognized and played nice with the new drive.

That's good news, because that game me just the operability I needed to get rid of Vista forever and replace it with XP 64 bit.
