Headphones work weirdly. Please help!

I have an HP laptop with Windows Home Premium. My speakers and headphones both perform. There is one problem though. For example, if I am watching a video on YouTube through my speakers and then plug my headphones in, the sound will still come out of my speakers. If I close my browser and re-open it with the headphones still plugged in, the sound then comes out of the headphones. This happens with any program. If the program is opened after I plug the headphones in, then the sound will come out of them. Can anyone help me correct this problem?
