Can only log on with safe mode..

I've been having issues lately with my laptop and I'm not sure what it is. But every time I would restart my computer, and after I would log on, a blank white screen would show instead of my desktop. It would stay there for only about a minute, then everything would be normal.
But about two days ago, I restarted it, and the blank white screen will NOT go away. I left it up for about 20 minutes, and nothing happened. I can log in and get online with safe mode, but I really don't want to always have to use safe mode all the time.
Help!!

had u had a windows vista update or any other software change before it went into safe mode

I had a similar issue where I could see the cursor but no background or icons. I had to disable the User Account Control (UAC) so explorer could run.

There was only one user on the pc. I set the Windows firewall on, installed antivirus and there is a firewall setup on their router. I just left the UAC turned off until the next round of updates to see if that will fix the problem.

sorry I missed your question about the updates. Yes, there was a Windows update, just before the problem happened. SP1 for Vista only enabled me to get control of the desktop through task manager so I could manually load explorer.
