Do I really have to reformat?

Hello I just wanted a second opinion. I am
using Vista on a HP entertainment pc. All of
a sudden I couldn't run updates, and could
not use restore, HP suggests I reformat
to factory settings. Is this a good idea?
I would really hate to lose most of the
stuff I have on here. I know even if I back
up it can't save everything. Thanks~

It probably is a good idea to reformat in that case. Can you back up your data? You will have to reinstall your apps and everything, but you won't lose your data.
