microphone issues

I am having some problems getting my microphone to work

here are the required details:

Operating system: Vista Home Premium SP 1
Sound Card: Realtek High Definition Audio ALC888S with front panel MicIn and Headphone jack
Microphone: Creative Labs Desktop Mic (unknown age, but certainly old)

This same microphone has worked under XP, but it's not working under Vista whatsoever, even when i disable the DigitalIn jack

The sound card's driver version is 6.0.1.5502
