My Webcam does not work on laptop with Vista

My webcam that was on my desktop with xp worked great, and now that i have tried to get it to work on my toshiba laptop with vista i cant even find it as hardware on the computer. there is nowhere for me to click and begin using it. i tried updating the software but still its the same. does anyone know how i can get it to work? thanks
