mouse problem

I can't work out how to change the settings on my Dell Premium mouse so that clicking the middle wheel button opens up a new tab in Firefox/Explorer; also the two side thumb buttons scroll up and down the page instead of functioning as back-forward shortcuts...

Tried the usual methods (control panel, mouse settings, etc) and the problem affects both Firefox and Explorer so I don't think it's a browser setting issue.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks
