downgrading to win xp from vista

Due to irreconcilable issues with legacy software, Microsoft sent me a disk of win xp pro sp2 with instructions and a link to upgrade that to the sp3 version. I am now unable to reach the tech department, my emails are bouncing back as undeliverable. I need someone to walk me through the process. Do I need to reformat my hard drive? Or can this be done without a complete wipe?
