> I'm attempting to install a simple add-in for Adobe Connect, this has
> to be
> installed as a regular user to function. It worked fine on our old
> system
> image, but under our new one we are prompted for elevated privileges.
> I've
> tried going through all the security settings for both images but
> cannot find
> the difference. Can anyone shed some light on what security setting
> would
> cause an add-in for IE would prompt for admin rights?

Have you tried a different name for your installer?
>> The version of Vista I use, running IE7, cannot download .exes. My XP

You're mowst welcome, Feather. Yes, AVG 9 contains
> Basic antivirus and antispyware protection for Windows
and it's shutting off Defender, which is what it's supposed to do.

Windows Defender is automatically turned off during installation
http://www.avg.com/us-en/faq.num-2672#faq_2672

" During the installation of AVG 9.0 products, the Microsoft Windows
Defender application will be automatically turned off.

Windows Defender is not removed from the computer, only disabled for the
time AVG is installed.

Please note that this is important to prevent conflicts between AVG and
Windows Defender. As they are both security applications, they will try
to check files you are working with. Since they will do that at the same
time, conflicts may arise. These can cause freezing, crashes or slowdown
of computer. It is generally not recommend to use more than one security
product on one computer. "

Actually, one can use more than one security product on the same
computer BUT only *one* of should be actively monitoring the system
(aka RealTime Protection).

So, if you want to manually update Defender so it can be used to *scan*
the system IF a malware issue arises, you can get it's latest definiton
file from here:
> Hi MowGreen,
>
> Thanks for the help. I have done some further research and now believe
> the problem lies with AVG 9.0 and the fact there is some incompatibility
> problem with it and Windows Defender. AVG 9.0 seems to switch
> Defender off. However, if I open and turn it on when I turn on my
> computer then it seems to work fine. It only switches off when I turn
> my computer off.
> Unfortunately, none of these options worked on this one file. I had to
>I have Vista Ultimate.
> Recently I have noticed that my Weborook Antispyware has been catching
> more things, including one virus today, and I wonder if it is because
> I now have att email (I used to have MSN dialup before) or if it is
> due to the new updates made to it after Windows 7 was released, which
> might have loosened its security or added new ways for spyware or
> malware to get in?
> Please advise.

Without knowing exactly what malware was found (and where), we will have
no way of knowing how it got in. A typical way to get in is to trick the
user into allowing it (either through the web browser, chat client, or
e-mail program). I would more easily believe that an update to the
antimalware is responsible for increased detections - or that you have
been getting more exposure than before (which couild be related to a new
e-mail address).
> Maybe, IPsec is enabled on the machine with a policy to block ICMP. A
> drop message by the FW wouldn't be logged, as IPsec sits in front of the
> FW and blocks.
>
> Other than IPsec with an IPsec policy or something else like a 3rd
> personal FW solution running on the machine that's doing the blocking,
> then nothing else on Vista other than Vista's FW is going to be blocking.
>
I have installed the machine and I'm the only administrator of the
system. No third party packet filters nor IPsec policies are installed
or active. FYI, ICMP echo request and replies flow normally.

I found the same complaint on web
(http://www.vistax64.com/vista-securi...-requests.html), but without solution.

Can anybody at least confirm that it's a bug/feature of Windows Vista?
(I don't have any other system to compare it.)
> After attempting to install the Service Pac 2, regMech totally shutts down
> the MS One Care fireall, &WILL Not allow the BTS to remain ON. This happened
> on this VISTA/VIAO platform only. Our PC, with XP can run REG MECH and get
> AUTO UPDATES without shutting down anything.
> REG MECH is totally gone form OS now. There's $29.95 gone to cyber space!!
>
> recently, I went back and 'hid' the last 2 security updates for VISTA, but
> installed the new VISTA OS Platform. Then attempting to re-install the 2
> hidden updates, both error codes # 643, 646 appeared.
> Ive installed the MS Removal tool pertaining to the repair for these
> two.......found nothing.
>
> Bad install? Corrupt download?? REG MECH have anything to do with any of
> this??

It's probably all Registry Mechanic's fault. If possible, undo
everything it's done. If you can't do that, it's possible that you may
not have any other recourse than reinstalling Windows from scratch.

Get rid of Registry Mechanic. It, and all other programs like it, are
junk, useless at best, and dangerous at worst. Here's my standard
message on the subject of registry cleaners:

Registry cleaning programs are *all* snake oil. Cleaning of the
registry isn't needed and is dangerous. Leave the registry alone and
don't use any registry cleaner. Despite what many people think, and
what vendors of registry cleaning software try to convince you of,
having unused registry entries doesn't really hurt you.

The risk of a serious problem caused by a registry cleaner erroneously
removing an entry you need is far greater than any potential benefit
it may have.

First, using google to look up a start-up item will get you many
HiJackThis logs as a return. Since many people post HJT logs as a result
of trying to clear a malware infestation, you will start thinking that
this startup item is related to the malware that they are trying to rid
themselves of. HJT logs list what is there, and makes no judgement calls
(that is left to the analysts, and is the reason for that program being
so useful).

I could make a guess that this is a legitimate startup item, but it
would be best to submit the executable referenced to further scrutiny by
using Virustotal or Jotti online submission scanning.
>>>I have the following question, if this is not the Newsgroup to post
>>>it, can you advise where I can post it?:
>>>
>>> Today I noticed that after I got to my startup programs (thru
>>> msconfig) as have as one of my items "DT GWY" and under the
>>> Manufacturer it says "Unknown" and under Location it says
>>> "HKLM/Software/Microsoft/Windows/Current Version/Run"
>>>
>>> I have Windows Vista Ultimate.
>>>
>>> I Goggled the work DT GWY, and did not find any thing definitive of
>>> what it really it, a reference or some to a Trojan, and just a lot
>>> of words that would not mean much to a person who is not very
>>> familiar with these things, like myself.
>>>
>>> Can any one advise what this "DT GWY" is? I just unclicked its left
>>> box, so it would not start when I restart the computer. If it is a
>>> bad Trojan or a malware, how could I get rid of it?
>>>
>>> I use Webrook Antispyware, but apparently it has not picked this
>>> thing yet (Or it is not supposed to pick it?).
>>>
>>> Thanks in advance.

I have a vista computer and windows 2003 network. When I run the vpn wizard
on my vista computer it connects to the network. I can ping all of my
servers ( I have added all servers and their IP addresses to the hosts
file). When I try to access any shared drive using the ip address or netbois
name it times out on me. I did the same setup on my other windows 7 computer
and I was able to access all shared drives.

I thought it might be my Norton 360 so I disabled it. Still no cigar. I
re-installed the vpn wizard but still no cigar. I am sure the problem the
problem is with the vista machine and NOT the network. Any suggestions.
