> why no Windows 7 account or folder or category here yet?
> This is MS and they do not have Anything here about Win7?

Because they made a web based forum, no Win7 group on
microsoft.public.windows

There is an alt.windows7.general, but I don't think msnews(or whatever the
standard server is for Windows Live Mail) has alt groups.

You would need to add a new server, plenty are free.
news.x-privat.org is an example (all you need is to register).

Here are some others
>I was playing a simple board game backgammon (no disk IO, no net traffic)
>while my hard drive suddenly start to have a flurry of activity like a
>virus scanner is running or something.
>
> During this time, the system is sluggish. When I ctrl-alt-del nothing
> happens for half a minute and then an error dialog box something about
> login ID. The screen stopped refreshing for another few seconds, then I
> ctrl-alt-del again and this time got the task manager.
>
> I closed all apps and killed many processes I can see, but still the disk
> activity goes on. There are only about 8 process left -- window explorer,
> taskmgr.exe, taskeng.exe, rundll32.exe, ...
>
> All processes except idle has 0% cpu time.
>
> I have also turned off auto update, turned off auto virus scanning, etc.
> I unplugged network cable, I logged off -- no help.
>
> I logged back on. After a few more minutes the activities stopped.
>
> This is driving me mad. I don't like the hard drive having a lot of
> activity when I'm not initiating any disk IO.
>
> Is there a tool that would tell me what process (could be a hidden one) is
> generating the disk IO next time it happens?
>
>I am using Vista 64 with all of the latest updates and the machine is only5
> months old with 4 gig of ram and plenty of empty space on the hard drive.
> I
> am getting the "not responding" from Vista numerous times. It does not
> appear all of the time and I can get it after a fresh boot and sign in or
> after I have used system for quite a while. The not responding will
> eventually go away but it can take sometimes almost a minute or so. I get
> it
> in numerous applications and I have paired down the programs which
> automatically start on boot.
>
> Does anyone know why I am getting this and how to fix it?
> Hi there, I am having some major trouble with this right now, I am
> getting this annyoing error for 5 programs:
>
> Audacity
> MSN
> AIM
> Yahoo Messenger
> RegistryBoost ( I had JUST downloaded this to try and fix this error!
> :mad::cry:)
>
> The first 4 I use a lot, MSN and Yahoo I always use during work to see
> if any new emails pop up, I use Audacity to edit music, and now with
> this error, I can't chat or edit music.
>
> I think this may have to do with it:my laptop was trying to update
> yesterday when it was shutting down, but it was doing nothing. So I shut
> it off, hoping that I could try again and it had to undo the
> configurations it had just made, and I think that may have broken those
> 4 programs. How do I fix this? Being able to know when I get emails,
> chatting with my friends, and editing music are the things I do the most
> on this laptop, and not being able to do so worries and frustrates me.
> having problems with my mouse being non-responsive at times. This happens
>>> A friend who has Windows XP Home running on his machine has had
>>> several problems in the past week with lockups and not shutting down.
>>> He has run Chkdsk and no errors were found. He ran his virus checker
>>> ( Avast ) and again no errors were found. He used the Restore program
>>> and successfully restored his computer which resulted in the lockups
>>> while running from occurring again, but his computer will now not
>>> shutdown. He reverts to shutting it down manually, which I explained
>>> can cause more problems.
>>> I told him he should have tried the safe mode option to restart in
>>> the last good configuration first but at that point he had already
>>> used Restore. I have e-mailed him the Microsoft article:

Hi, Sunil.

Even though we don't usually see it, each file/folder with a Long File Name
(LFN) also has a computer-created Short File Name (SFN), also referred to as
an 8.3 filename, since it is limited to 8 characters plus and optional
extension of up to 3 characters. (This goes back in computer history to
MS-DOS and before.)

To see the 8.3 filename of your folder, open a Command Prompt and enter:
Dir /x

That command should present the usual listing of all the files and folders
in that directory, as with the plain Dir command. But the /x switch will
create an additional column, before the LFN, showing the SFN for any file or
folder whose LFN does not also meet the 8.3 requirements. Perhaps there is
a space or other "illegal" character in the filename. The SFN for a LFN
will probably have 6 characters, followed by ~1, or some other digit.

Use the Del or RD command with that SFN to delete your file or remove your
folder. Using RD <SFN> /s for the top-level folder should remove that whole
directory tree.

(As always in a Command Prompt window, type the name of any command followed
by /? to see all the switches and parameters available with that command,
such as: Dir /? )
> Anyone know how to convert a scanned document to Open Office/ Or save the
> scan to Works Word Processor that can be edited afterward? I've tried PDF
> but can't edit. The scan also looks a little fuzzy. Can I make the scan
> sharper? Using a HP all in one printer, copier, fax machine.

As already noted you need OCR (Optical Character Recognition) Software.
A straight scan is an image - a picture.
You have to "scan" it through OCR or to a PDF and then OCR the PDF.

Do a google on "Free OCR Software" and choose and experiment until you find
one you like.
Spend a couple of bucks and buy something like OmniPage and PaperPort if
you're going to be doing much of this type of activity.
> I don't know the best place to post this question.
>
> I have Windows 7 and Office 2007
> GPO - Redirected "Documents" folder to SBS2008 share
> Browsing and saving to My Documents for some users takes a long time.
>
> A user may try to save a 1 page word document. It sometimes take 2 mintues
> to save it. This is not and has never been a problem on XP or Vista
> machines.
>
> Any help is greatly appreciated

What anti-virus program are you running? We had a similar problem
with Norman (not Norton) when saving to a network drive. We had
to turn off the on-access scanner. Finally I ditched Norman and installed
MS Security Essentials and we now have no problem.
> > Hi,
> > I have Windows Vista Home Premium Edition on my laptop.
> > When I browse, using Internet Explorer, the pane successively becomes
> > smaller. Every time I click, the lower border moves upwards a bit and after a
> > while only a narrow stripe remains. Very annoying!
> > Why does this happen?
> > What can I do to get rid of this annoying behaviour?
>
> I am not overly familiar with IE, but have you looked at the checkboxes
> under Browsing at Tools -> internet options -> Advanced?
>
> In Firefox, there are also checkboxes associated with Javascript in
> Options -> Content -> Enable Javascript -> Advanced
