Hi, again, Gail.

Did you see my reply to your identical post in the other newsgroup?

On those rare occasions when you MUST post the same question to multiple
groups, please cross-post. That is, put all the groups into the Newsgroups
(address) box of a single message. That way, the message will show up in
each of the groups and after I read it in one group, it will be marked
"Read" - for me - in all of them. Each reader will see all the other
replies and we won't duplicate each other's efforts. The payoff for you is
that all the responses will also appear in every group in a single coherent
thread and you won't have to check all the groups for replies.

In the other reply I forgot to mention that what I suggested can be done
with the tools built into Vista, mostly Disk Management. It may be more
work than with 3rd-party software, but it can be done with what you have
already paid for.

HI, Skera.

Rick is correct, of course. But I'm more wordy than he is. ;^}

Your choice depends on what you want to end up with.

The simplest way to get rid of WinXP is just to delete the D:\Windows folder
tree - completely. That is ALL that is really necessary; the rest of this
is optional.

To remove distractions and reclaim a small amount of space that won't be
needed anymore, delete nearly all the files you mentioned:

> autoexec ... config.sys, io, msdos,

These haven't been needed since Win98.

> boot.ini, ... ntdetect, ntldr

These are used only by WinXP (and Win2K).

> bootmgr

Vista - and Win7 - DO need bootmgr.

> bootsect

There are two versions of bootsect: Bootsect.dos is a copy of the
WinXP-style boot sector, so it is just 512 bytes; it is used only to start
WinXP when dual-booting, so it can be deleted. You'll need bootsect.exe if
you ever want to change to the WinXP-style boot sector OR if your Vista/Win7
boot sector needs to be rewritten - so keep it in your hidden D:\Boot
folder.

> the pagefile :)

The page file is a separate topic. This file gets re-written each time you
reboot anyhow, so you can use Advanced System Settings, while running Vista,
to put it wherever you want. Then delete any other one that might remain
because it will never be used, anyhow.

Another solution would be to disconnect (physically or in the BIOS) both
Disk 0 and Disk 1, then insert the Vista DVD and run Setup to let it create
a new System Volume in the primary partition on what is now Disk 2. Your
Drive C: would then be both the System Volume and Vista's Boot Volume. That
would let you reformat your Drive D: when you reconnect it and use it for
data or any other need you might have.

> Right, dont ask me why i set so many primarys lol.. Hope it wont affect
> me!

Windows doesn't care how many primary partitions you have. I also have 3,
one on each HDD, and made sure that each is Active (bootable). Each is
quite small because the only contents are Startup files. The rest of each
HDD is an Extended Partition, divided into several Logical Drives; some of
these serve as Boot Volumes for various Windows installations. I ran Vista
Setup 3 times, once with each HDD set as the Boot Device (NOT the same as
the Boot Volume) in the BIOS, so the first partition on each HDD can serve
as the System Partition. If Disk 0 becomes unbootable, I can reset the BIOS
to boot from Disk 1 - or Disk 2 - and be back in business in a hurry. The
boot-up process always starts in the System Partition - which is the Active
primary partition on the currently-designated HDD - and branches from there
to the Boot Volume of whichever Windows version is selected from the OS
menu.

Hi,

Not quite. Once you change the active drive, you will need to boot from the
disk and repair the boot, making the drive with Win7 the [system] drive.
Once changed, that is where the BIOS will look to transfer control to, so
the boot files need to be placed there before you will get a successful
boot. After completing the repair, you can then format C: and remove Vista.
>> Hi,
>>
>> If you just format and do a repair of the boot from the Win7 disk, that
>> will not change the active drive, and you'll wind up just having the boot
>> file placed back where they already are. If you want the boot files on
>> the same drive as Win7, then that volume needs to be marked as [active]
>> using disk manager.
>>>>>> Hi Doug,
>>>>>>
>>>>>> In win-speak, the volume containing the boot files is designated as
>>>>>> the system volume (and the one containing the system files is the
>>>>>> boot volume). If you format or remove C: at this point, you would
>>>>>> have to run a repair from the Win7 booted disk. If the drive is left
>>>>>> in place, you will need to remark E: as the active volume first or it
>>>>>> will just repair the boot on C:.
>>>>>
>>>>> I would I remark I: as the active volume???
>>>>>
>>>>> I was thinking if I manually removed the C: Drive which is partitioned
>>>>> in tom C: and D:.
>>>>> Then the 2nd Drive with E: and F: on it will be the only drive. Since
>>>>> E: has Windows 7 on it .I can start up windows from the DVD and do a
>>>>> repair???
>>>>>
>>>>> Then I can install the other drive again and format it??
>>>>>
>>>>> I just want to make sure, I did something like this once and lost both
>>>>> OS's
>>>>> Thank You Very Much
>>>>>>>
>>>>>>>> Run disk manager and look at the hard drives, as Win7 usually sets
>>>>>>>> up a separate boot volume. If it has, you would be safe to format
>>>>>>>> C: and simply remove the reference from Win7's boot manager.
>>>>>>>>
>>>>>>>> And yes, you could simply insert the disk and run a repair on the
>>>>>>>> boot sector.
>>>>>>>>
Hi,

Just a quick question really...

In your opinion, what is the best way to go about slipstreaming .net,
ie8 etc?

I have already created a Vlited SP1 Vista ISO with the latest updates
slipstreamed using Autopatcher (won't be upgrading to SP2 because it
breaks the wireless connectivity with my printer and i couldn't figure
out why!). Tested this install in VMWare and its working fine.

So far i have come across using OEM folders and Reverse Integration.
I'm thinking reverse integration because it seems pretty straight
forward when using VMWare and it means i can briefly set up the OS with
reg tweaks, layout etc. before creating the new wim. Also, setup should
be faster because no folders are copied to the hard drive before
installation as with OEM folders.

But before i go ahead and do this...i wanted to know if there were any
other routes and whether they would be better?

Thanks :)
It is only the disk which is BIOS locked. The product key could be used
on any machine. If you copy a Microsoft disk you can use that on any
machine. But the manufacturer supplied disks may incorporate machine
specific drivers, so you may need to download and install those separately.
>>>
>>> I spent a bit of time having to re-install operating systems. With
>>> Vista,
>>> there are too many variations. What I would mind doing is having 1 DVD
>>> that
>>> can install any edition [or at least home basic, and home premium] and
>>> whether it's OEM or retail.
>>>
>>> Alternatively is to "convert" a retail DVD to an OEM DVD.
>>>
>>> I'm not worried about licensing because it's a reinstall and the user
>>> would
> Hello,I just tried upgrading from Microsoft Windows Vista Home
> Premium to Windows Vista Ultimate...at first it checked my system
> for compatibility (yes, I instereted the disk into the CD drive
> thingy and then clicked upgrade while Home Premium was
> running)...once it finished checking for compatibility it said this:
>
> so I searched the Internet for that Knowledge Base article and I
> found something...but I don't know if it's what I needed...this is
> the one that I found
> http://social.answers.microsoft.com/...6a90a and
> I'm not going to try that just yet. During installation it gave me
> the option of ignoring the error; so I kept on going with the
> upgrade (home premium to Ultimate) and everything looked normal
> until it got to the part where it was completeing the upgrade...it
> stayed there for a few minutes and then an error box came up during
> the installation (completeing upgrade final part) and it said that
> one or more of my system components prevented the upgrade...so it
> brought my old version of Windows Vista back...and now I'm stuck
> with Windows Vista Home Premium...is there anything else I can do
> other then what the forums article said? I don't want to do what the
> Microsoft forums guy said to do in Safe Mode because it seems like a
> lot of work...so I'm looking for any other possible solution to
> these problems.Thank you!
A shot in the dark. Are you mixing 32 bit and 64 bit versions?
> New system and don't have a floppy or cd burner yet. Was hoping to use the
> option with memtest to run from a thumb drive. Guess that won't work.
>> And of course you checked your BIOS settings to make sure they match
>> your processor and RAM modules??
>>
>> memtest is best run of a floppy or CD/DVD
