Hi, Gail.

You haven't given us any numbers. Like, how big is the HDD? How big were
the two partitions to start? How big are they now? How much is the
unallocated space between them? (Maybe we could guess that last answer if
we knew the old and new sizes of D:.

IF THE NUMBERS FIT, then you could create a new partition between D: and
G: - let's call it X:. Then copy everything from G: into X:. Then delete
G:. Create your new partition after X:; that's what used to be G: plus
unallocated space; we'll call it Z:. Then assign the letter G: to X:.
Final configuration: D:, G:, Z:.

For example with some random numbers; 160 GB HDD divided into two 80 GB
partitions, now shrunk to 30 and 40 GB, leaving 50 and 40 GB unallocated
spaces. Create 40 GB Drive X: between D: and G:. Move G:'s contents to X:.
Delete G:, leaving a single unallocated space of 90 GB ((50=40=10) + 40 +
40). Final: 30 GB D:, 40 GB G:, 90 GB available for X: or Z: or whatever
you choose.

There are many possible variations on this theme IF THE NUMBERS FIT. For
example, you could create Z: first, move G:'s contents there, delete the old
G: and create your new partition between D: and G: (Z:).

Give us some numbers and let us play some "What if?" with them.
> allocated to drives D and drive G. I shrunk both and the unallocated space
am a sidebar gadget freak, ma whole desktop is filled with it. The problem that I am encountering is, these gadget keep on moving from right to left (hand) (only the once which are undocked ) the movement is very minor, and can be noticed only after few days, it takes place every time I start the laptop, I can accelerate the movement by restarting or shutting it down and starting it again continuously. I have to every time rearrange the gadgets.

How do I stop this automatic movement.
> This really puzzles me since I don't know how the hid driver can be
I've searched for help with this specific problem but have found none. I
installed iTunes sometime ago to rip CDs, and really regret it. It took
over the autoplay for when an audio CD is inserted, and the system
completely ignores what I have set for the handler (Windows Media
Player). So today I finally got around to just completely uninstalling
iTunes, and it didn't fix the problem. Now the same thing happens,
except when I double click on the CD drive icon instead of launching
iTunes I get the message "Windows cannot access the specified device,
path, or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access
the item." Where is the registry entry buried that is causing this?

By the way, I hate iTunes. I never should have installed that. I don't
know why people like it.
> For some reason, when I go to the sounds folder in Control Panel and
> look at my sound devices, the only thing that shows is the built-in
> microphone.
>
> I have no line-in, aux, mono, cd-stereo, et cetera... those drivers
> just aren't there! Gone! I got this computer YESTERDAY and I can't
> edit any sound whatsoever unless it is recorded from my microphone. I
> am pretty p.o.ed. Why on earth would Vista NOT come with these
> drivers??
>
> I really need help on sorting out this problem. I am trying to edit
> sound files like .mp3s and .wavs in Audacity
> (http://audacity.sourceforge.net/), and since the only recording device

Hi, James.

I haven't checked out DVD drives, but I've had more than one HD maker honor
their 5-year warranty. One was a Seagate only a few months from the end of
the 5 years.

We used to hear the sad term "infant death syndrome" applied to electronic
components. Experience showed that if a device was bad it was most likely
to fail within the first 3 months or so of use. If it survived the first 90
days, it would likely run indefinitely, probably for many years.

But Richard's point is that when the drive is bad, no amount of griping or
hoping is going to revive it. Face the fact and take the appropriate
action. With or without a warranty, replace it. Otherwise, you'll still be
griping and hoping - and staring at a dead drive - six months from now.
>> Drives can go bad whenever they go bad. Days, weeks, months, years. If
>> BIOS does not see it and all connections are known to be good, then the
>> drive has likely failed.
>>>
>>>>> What would cause Vista x32 sp2 to all of a sudden not see my
>>>>> DVD RW Drive. I went to open it today and nothing happened.
>>>>> I checked 'Computer' and the device wasn't there. I checked
>>>>> BIOS and it showed as 'None'. The only option in the BIOS other
>>>>> than 'None' was 'Disabled'
>>>>> I opened my computer and checked the ribbon which seemed to be
>>>>> connected ok. After jiggling the ribbon and checking the other
>>>>> connections it now seems to be ok.
>>>>> Could this be a bad ribbon?
>>>>>
>>>>> James
>>>>>
>>>>>
>>>> Yes, or it could have been a loose or dirty connection. It's also
>>>> possible that the drive may be failing and will act up intermittently.
>>>> Note the MS Fix mentioned is irrelevant. If the drive was not being
>>>> detected by the BIOS, it has nothing to do with Windows.
> > That is going to be a LOT of CDs, those CDs could be used to
> > restore onto
> > know that
> > the restore will permit access to the files. EFS (encrypted)
Backing up to ROM (read only media) would be almost useless after a
few days. Incremental back ups to a remote hard drive would be better
suited.
Hi,

When I let the computer sit for awhile or I turn it off for the night,
when it comes back on, the screen stays dim for a bit, then starts to
slowly flicker and then it flashes quickly and then becomes bright and
normal. It stays bright and normal until the next time it puts itself to
sleep or I shut it down for any real length of time. Sometimes it stays
dim and/or flickers for a longer time period than others. Using the
computer seems to make it go faster, but when the flashing starts going
hard and fast, it hurts my eyes to look at it.

Thank you in advance for your time and any advice you might have for
me.
