If you can get a Microsoft installation disk - for any, presumably
32-bit, version of Vista - the key would work although you might need to
phone for activation.

What you say is largely correct. There are very few 64-bit programs
yet. That means that the advantage of 64-bit Windows is mostly
*potential* right now. I think it's good to be running 64-bit Windows
instead of 32-bit Windows, because it lets you buy and install 64-bit
software as it becomes available in the future (and almost certainly,
we will all start seeing more and more of this very soon). But don't
expect much of a performance increase until you start running 64-bit
software.
> My company has an Excel application we have developed and we use an Installer
> program to distribute it. The installer default is to install the program
> into a Program File that is named. This works flawlessly on xp but on any
> computer that has Vista installed, the file opens in Read Only, which defeats
> our entire application. The read only format can not be changed in any of the
> obvious ways (under Properties etc). This is a huge problem for us. Is there
> any way around it?

Unlike XP's Programs File folder, the Vista Programs File folder is a
protected folder. Vista is not going to allow a file to be 'write'
accessed by an application.

So, you shouldn't place a file in the Program Files area on Vista where
an application needs write access to a file.

My computer froze during the restart process of a recent update
(KB971512) forcing me to manually restart it and now loads very slowly.
It runs fine except for whenever it need to load (example: Left 4 Dead 2
take about 10 minutes to load a level, but then runs fine besides the
occasional sputter when it loads during play).

Other things: whenever I start Windows, it comes up with "Windows
update: Configuring 3/3 0%" but then moves onto the login screen. I also
tried running Windows update again (I thought maybe it would catch it's
own error or something) but I get error 80070002, which I already did
their prescribed fix for only to still get the same error. I cannot
uninstall this update from the installed updates list. Also, I'm on
Vista 64 bit.

I think that's about it. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Edit: Oh wow. Sorry about all the typos in the title.
>>> I am looking forward to buy a netbook with windows 7 ; I´ve seen lots
>>> of configurations for Notebooks and Desktops , going from 2GB to 8 GB
>>> RAM
>>> Of course more RAM is ok ; The thing is I want an
>>> acceptable computer , and the most I´ve seen announced is 2 GB RAM
>>> I know it will probably run Windows 7 ; but is 2 GB an
>>> acceptable number ? Supposing a buy a computer with a Core 2 Duo
>>> processor and having in mind that I don´t care for games or graphics
>>> at all is the above configuration OK ?
>>>               Thanks a lot
>>
>>IMHO - when you get to 2gb and Core 2 Duo - you're not talking about a
>>netbook any more.
Well I checked as you said too, and found nothing as such, ya there is a lock for keeping the gadget on top of other windows, but non to lock it to the desktop.
>
> Try right clicking the moving gadget and see if there is a setting that
> allows you to 'lock' it in place. If so, lock it in place and see if
> that corrects the issue.
