> In desperate need of help!
>
> I was trying to install something on my computer, and it kept telling
> me I didn't have administrative rights to do so. So I browsed through
> some older posts in this forum and set out to fix things on my own: big
> mistake. I right clicked on the C drive and went to Properties. I
> clicked the Security tab and then proceeded to go to both Authen. User
> and Users, editing them both and giving them both full control. Anyways,
> I got paranoid about this (plus it didn't help me in the download
> process of what I needed at all), and I went under Authen. User first,
> and clicked "deny" under full control. And now? It's gone, the whole
> user group is gone!
>
> So I really need help with two things. How do I get that group back?
>

By selecting "Deny" for all users who log into the computer, you've
effectively locked out *everyone*, as even the local Administrator is a
member of those groups. You only recourse now is to format the hard
drive and reinstall the OS. You'll need to use something like a Linux
Live CD, which operates "outside" the NTFS file permissions, to access
and recover any important data before doing so. A very useful one can be
found here: http://www.ubcd4win.com/index.htm

> And what "rights" should be allowed under both Au. User and Users? I
> really want to just set things back in order. Please help!
>
>

Those groups would normally never have permissions higher then "Modify"
on any files/folders, assuming that you're using only applications
properly designed to run under Vista's security paradigm.

I'm using Windows Vista 32, and I am having the problem of not able to install software that uses Windows Installer. I get the error message saying Windows Installer could not be accessed. I've tried all the solutions on the net including:
1) Downloading registry fixes and running them
2) going into msconfig (Windows Installer is "stopped" and there is nothing I can do to enable / disable / start it)
3) Going into services.msc (I've changed Windows Installer status to manual and tried to "start" but i get error message "access is denied")
4) Trying to find the WOW64 registry key under the Windows Registry and change it to 0 (but beecause I'm using Windows Vista 32 i don't think this is relevant for me)
5) Deleting the ENUM subfolder under the msiservice folder in the registry.
6) Running scannow under Command prompt, with Windows operating System cd inside
7) Even tried "installing Windows VIsta" using the operating system CD, but I get an error message saying cannot create the required installation folder!

None of the above worked for me! I still cannot install anything that requires windows installer.

Please help..

If the following is useful:
A while back I tried playing with the permissions of folders (i.e. right click on C drive, properties > security tab > users) and I terminated the action while it was trying to apply changes in giving / removing permission to various users and got the information that some permission settings may be corrupted. As of now I can't set permission in C:, in system32 etc. Even though I am the administrator and there is no other users in this computer, and I have already disabled UAC. Could this be the cause of the problem? If so how do I resolve it

Thanks in advance.

> Help - my son has changed the (only) administrator password and
> forgotten it.
> How can I get round this?
If you forget the administrator’s password but still can log on Windows
with other user names that have administrative privileges, you may
follow the instructions below:
Right click the computer icon on your desktop, select Manage, find
Local Users and Groups, unfold Users folder, right click Administrator,
click Set password… in the menu comes up. Click Proceed in the dialog,
in the pop-up, enter a New Password and confirm it. Your administrator’s
password is successfully reset.
Guest account may help to log onto Windows, but it has no privilege for
you to do the above to reset the administrator’s password.
If you forgot all user passwords and failed to log onto Windows, there
is no other way but to format the OS and reinstall Windows, or resort to
sort of software tools to remove the password and log onto Windows.
These programs cost some bucks, but are worthy and better than to
reinstall the OS causing consequences. The most popular programs are
Windows Password Reset 6.0 etc. Generally, these programs are easy to
use though turn out to be a scary command prompt to newbie. But do relax
and you can fully manipulate. Let’s take Windows Password Reset 6.0 for
example. You prepare a blank CD, burn the program onto the CD, boot the
locked computer from the CD, come to initiate the program, locate the
user name, and proceed to remove its password – all are at ease.
