Cannot read some files downloaded

Hi, I know this is something simple,, I hope someone knows what I should do??? Some things I download or try to view, looks like this,,,,, This is opened with wordpad, also looks like this with word. What do I need to do??? Please help??? I am runing Vista 64

It would help to know what you are downloading...


Some of the tips when downloading:
Right mouse click and choose Save As... instead of just clicking on a download button.
