Missing config file..

I have a new Advent QC running Vista Home Premium. It's worked fine for 2 weeks but I've lost my desktop and several progs inc Media player isn't working. On bootup i get a message saying that the address win\sys32\config\sysprofile\desktop isn't valid and it defaults to the original. The config directory won't open, won't delete, won't do anything. I copied it to a different drive and it opened but it's empty!!! HELPPPP !!!!

lol, I don't know how else to say it but thanks for trying to reduce my worry from gigantic to small.
