driver installation module stopped working and was closed

Hi. I suspect this is a recurring problem, but I received the above message after trying to reinstall my Dell PIO 922 scanner/printer on my Toshiba Satellite laptop (purchased 2007). I have the home premium version of VISTA and within the past month, installed the new update. All the while I have been having driver issues related to USB ports and a new external hard drive. I had hoped that the update might address some of these problems, and i don't know if it has anything to do with my current problem which is this error message.

Any ideas on how to address the error message: the "driver installation module stopped working and was closed" I received it after uninstalling the printer software and reinstalling it. The driver shows no signs of problems in device manager, so I'm not sure what else to do.
Any help is much appreciated! Printing is kinda important, ya know?
