Xplornet is my provider as Telus has no high speed in my area. I kept my
telus email as I used it for years. I was set up with port 25 until I
contacted Xplornet who advised me to switch to 587. I had no problems the
initial setup for a month or so and then suddenly it stopped working

Are you sure smtp.xplornet.com supports port 587? Their online
setup instructions don't reflect it:

Which company is currently providing your connection to the Internet,
Xplornet or Telus? It is somewhat unusual to have the outgoing
and incoming mail servers belong to different providers.
