Hi Engel. Thanks for the v.prompt post. I ran the PC in safemode, deleted all
of the items that you suggested and then viewed all of the pages from the web
links. I'm afraid that I could not see my particular problem or a suitable
resolution in them and my problem remains. I have looked back in my Update
History Log and found that everything was 100% until 5.1.2008 when the
Windows Genuine Advantage Validation Tool(KB 892130) failed to install. There
has been in excess of 1000 installation attempts since, without a single
success. When I first became aware of the problem, the PC refused even to
search for updates, let alone download/install them. After validating my XP
O.S with the Microsoft website, I found that had no difficulty in seaching
for and downloading updates, but a complete blank on installing them. There
are currently 13 updates, total size 25mb, downloaded into folders on my P.C.
awaiting installation.As a lay person, it seems to me that the problem is
purely one of enabling BITS. Thank you for the help that you have given thus
far.
