Service Pack 1 will be available to the general public closer to the middle of December 2007. It is currently available to certain Beta Testers and also Technet Subscribers.
The Service Pack will be around 450MB in size and users will require around 4.5Gb of free space. This means that before you even think of getting the Service Pack you will need around 6Gb free space to be sure.
So what will Vista SP1 do for you...
Check out this link for a list of the fixes and improvements available in SP1 -

I installed SP1 on a HP Pavilion 9500 running Vista Home Premium today and when I finished IE will not open any pages any more (I am working thru FireFox right now to send this). The error is "[Web URL]" is not set up to establish a connection on port "World Wide Web service (HTTP)" with this computer.
Outlook works, FireFox works the internet is working it just seems a setting or a few of them may have been changed by Service Pack 1 - any help in discovering the cause would be ever so helpful.
THank you!
